Opportunities and paths for young academics in Catholic theology
Friday, 21.03. - Saturday, 22.03.2025

Theology is one of the classical disciplines of the university. Catholic theology is widely represented at German universities with 19 faculties and more than 30 teacher training institutions. More than 350 professors, over 200 academic staff and numerous researchers involved in third-party funded projects work in the field of Catholic theology at state and church-run universities. They research, train and are in demand internationally. They are in dialogue with other sciences, with the Church and with society.

Despite societal interest in religious and theological issues, however, headwinds can be felt: the position of theology in the house of science becomes just as much an issue as the dwindling number of students or their further career options. Many people wonder whether it makes sense to plan an academic career in theology. How does one become a professor of theology? What funding opportunities are there? What are the professionally adequate options if you don't get a chair? Is the path still worthwhile? The conference will explore these and other questions.

The workshop is aimed at all those who are doing or have recently done a doctorate in Catholic theology in German-speaking countries and are considering an academic career.
