Even after the destruction of the temple by Titus, Jews held on to the sacred centre of the temple, and Muhammad continued this tradition in his own way in his preaching. Under Caliph Umar, the holy place was returned to the worship of God and under Caliph Abd al-Malik, the Dome of the Rock was erected in its centre, which was regarded by Jewish and Christian voices as a restoration of Solomon's Temple.
