The great preacher, theologian, philosopher, mystic and teacher did not have an easy time with his church. We want to clarify Meister Eckhart's relationship with his Dominican order and what role the church as an institution or space, the papacy, priesthood and dogmatics played for him.
At the centre of this are questions about the relationship between the individual and the community as well as the mediating character of institutions on the one hand and the direct encounter with God on the other.

Meister Eckhart Society

Programme of the event:

The fact that the great preacher, theologian, philosopher, mystic, teacher and religious organiser did not have an easy time with his church is shown by the trial that was held against him and the condemnation of individual sentences of his teachings as heretical after his death in 1328. We will ask ourselves what his relationship was to his church, to his Dominican order and to monasticism in general, what he himself thought about the church and what role the church as an institution or space, the papacy, priesthood and laity, but also church dogmatics, played for him and in his time, with a focus on questions about the relationship of the individual to the community or the role of institutions and their mediating character on the one hand and the possible direct encounter with God of each individual on the other. And of course the situation in the early 14th century is also a distant mirror for today's. The annual conference of the Meister Eckhart Society on the 20th anniversary of its foundation in 2004, for the seventh time already in co-operation with the Catholic Academy in Bavaria, is open to all interested parties
