The philosopher and successful author Wilhelm Schmid will speak at the Catholic Academy (Mandlstraße 23) on Tuesday, 4 July 2023 at 7 pm. His topic is: "School of the Art of Living. A contribution to successful education".

The public evening is the focus of a closed symposium on the concept of education organised by Olivia Mitscherlich-Schönherr from the School of Philosophy.

Cooperation with:

Munich School of Philosophy

Programme of the event:

There is a lot of controversy about education. What are its goals? The acquisition of skills, competences, the shaping of personality? What does a good organisation of education look like? In which contexts should education take place, which media should it utilise? The public public usually focuses on the institutionalised education and upbringing of children and young people. However, all the theory and practice of education is permeated by images of humanity and ethical assumptions about a good, successful, happy life. The philosopher Wilhelm Schmid is a sought-after speaker and successful author. His books have been translated into many languages and have achieved a total circulation of well over 1.5 million copies. In his works, he addresses the issues facing people today and argues in favour of the philosophical virtue of prudence. His central book is The Philosophy of the Art of Living from 1998, which Schmid has used as a starting point to address topics such as happiness, love, serenity and friendship. This public evening is the centrepiece of the closed symposium "Successful Education", which Olivia Mitscherlich-Schönherr from the Hochschule für Philosophie - supported by Ilona Bechthold and Martin Mühlich - organised in and with the Catholic Academy. This collaboration continues a series on fundamental philosophical and ethical issues that has focussed on death, birth, "artificial naturalness" and the Anthropocene in recent years.
