A heated discussion has been going on for some time about the terms "political correctness", "wokeness", "identity politics" and "cancel culture". In general and in a positive sense, this refers to efforts not to name or treat other people in a discriminatory, exclusionary or offensive way.
Our conference on Monday, 12 June, will explore the following questions, among others: How far does the legitimate concern of Wokeness to take sides with the oppressed and disadvantaged go? What role do Christian values such as charity, justice or the option for the weak play in this? But where do the exaggerations of a Cancel Culture begin, which in turn become intolerant and hinder an open social discourse?
The Catholic Academy in Bavaria, the Chairs of Fundamental Theology and Moral Theology at the LMU Munich and the KHG at the LMU Munich cordially invite you to the conference and to the joint discussion!

Programme of the event:
The terms "political correctness", "wokeness", "identity politics" and "cancel culture" have been the subject of heated debate for some time now. In very general and positive terms, this primarily refers to efforts to avoid naming or treating other people in a discriminatory, marginalising or offensive way. In some cases, however, this goes so far that, for example, academics who hold a viewpoint that is undesirable for certain reasons are not invited to public events or are disinvited from them. How can rational arguments be made here without hardening the fronts? The conference will explore the following questions: How far does the legitimate concern of Wokeness go in taking sides with the oppressed and disadvantaged? What role do Christian values such as charity, justice or the option for the weak play in this? But where do the exaggerations of a cancel culture begin, which in turn become intolerant and hinder an open social discourse? What theoretical superstructure is associated with the code of behaviour demanded by identity politics movements? And finally: How do right-wing groups instrumentalise the reluctance of broad circles against wokeness for their political agitation? The Catholic Academy in Bavaria, the Chairs of Fundamental Theology and Moral Theology at the LMU Munich and the KHG at the LMU Munich cordially invite you to the conference and joint discussion!Monday, 12 June 2023Drinks on sale (from one hour before the start)17.00 Welcome17.15 "And the theological research train now also runs to Wokistan?"
